FAQs : About leadership How do you distinguish between leadership and management through your programmes? Whilst our programmes focus on the principles and practice of leadership, we acknowledge that both leadership and management are necessary for the successful running of an organisation.
The emphasis of all our programmes is to encourage participants to reflect on the full range of leadership issues. As part of that reflection, they think through for themselves what distinguishes leadership from management and how they can most successfully deliver their responsibilities from a position as a leader of society.
What advice or input do you receive on current academic thinking on leadership? Our Fellows advise on intellectual thinking, and ensure our programmes are at the cutting edge of leadership theory and practice. In addition, we are in regular contact with Business Schools and monitor appropriate publications to reinforce this advice.
What are your views on leadership – do you have a particular position that you advocate? We place a high value on the reflective approach to leadership, and the importance of developing leaders’ insight and wisdom. We recognise that this compliments and builds on both academic/intellectual thinking and practical experience, and believe that only through a combination of all of these can leaders truly benefit wider society.
Our programmes create the environment and opportunity for participants to think through for themselves what is, and will be, needed from leaders. Their conclusions are based on inputs from senior leaders, and from conversations and presentations from others on the programme.
Participants devote substantial time to thinking through the ethics and values of leadership and to assessing the most effective forms of leadership in various situations. We stress that leaders influence, and, therefore, have responsibility to, society.
