Our roots

When Professor Charles Handy and the Right Reverend Michael Mann set up the ‘Windsor Meetings’ under the guidance of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1981, they laid the foundations for a movement of leaders committed to shaping a better society.

These meetings, organised by St George’s House, Windsor Castle, brought together high-flyers from all walks of life, to analyse key issues facing society and look at the changes needed to respond to them in the decade ahead.

Referring to the meetings in his book The Empty Raincoat, Professor Handy wrote: “the ultimate benefit was the realisation that they [leaders] had the responsibility to shape the society which they were likely to inherit”.

A new organisation

By 1995, the need for exceptional leadership was becoming increasingly important. An independent charity, The Windsor Leadership Trust, was launched, with a focus on the top levels of leadership.

With five Windsor Leadership Programmes each year, aimed at leaders en route to the top; two Developing Strategic Leaders Programme, for those progressing towards more senior roles, three Newly Appointed Strategic Leaders Programme, for those new to a senior role; one Experienced Strategic Leaders Programmes, aimed at established strategic leaders who have been in post for several years, and the Strategic Leadership Consultation, for leaders at the highest level, we are now a unique resource on leadership.

Our evolution has seen a greater focus on leadership in a global context, the development of a strong Alumni network, and the strengthening of a diverse and influential group of Trustees, Fellows and Patrons.
