ArrowSir Ian Blair shares personal insight into leadership
Sir Ian Blair and Martyn LewisSir Ian Blair, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, delivered the Windsor Leadership Trust’s Annual Lecture on 12 October 2005. Speaking about his support for a “multi-disciplinary approach to leadership” to a 400 strong audience of senior leaders from all sectors of society, Sir Ian reflected on his personal leadership journey, the challenges of leadership, and on the impact of the events of the last few months.

His Lecture gave a strong insight into the challenges of leading “the largest single employer in London”, from when he took over the role in February 2005, through the events in July, up until now. He also shared his six strands of leadership, which included the importance of followship, and courage in setting the direction of travel.

He concluded: “Potentially the greatest [strand], and it does not matter at what level you are leading, is that the job of leaders is to seek out, to encourage, to develop the next generation”.

Following the lecture, Sir Ian was interviewed by Martyn Lewis, Broadcaster and Trustee of the Windsor Leadership Trust, whose questions included how Sir Ian would sum up the characteristics of a good leader under pressure. Sir Ian replied “I think a good leader under pressure is behaving in exactly the same way as a good leader who is not under pressure.”
